A Lesson in Evolution

I've often wondered about evolution and how it all works.  How do certain species thrive, while others die off?  How did giraffes get such long necks?  Why are elephants so fat?

One morning quite recently, I was putting the dirty dishes from my sink into my dishwasher.  On this morning, my sink had about six drinking glasses: three tall ones, and three tumblers.  I tend to let the dirties pile up, due to my busy schedule.  I also tend to soak the silverware in the taller glasses so the dishwasher doesn't have a hard time making them clean.

However, the silverware makes the taller glasses top heavy, and once in a while, they tall glasses with the silverware in them will fall over and crack!  The shorter glasses don't have this problem, as they are wider at the bottom and can withstand more of the weight of the forks and knives.

So, I've chalked this up to Charles Darwin's writings on the survival of the fittest.  My tumblers are better at dealing with the aggressive nature of my silverware and its gravitational effects.  The tall glasses just can't survive in this environment.
